In their book Peak Performance, Brad Stulberg and Steve Magness explore the science of unlocking our full potential. They argue that peak performance is not about being perfect or never making mistakes, but is centered around the idea that by adopting certain principles, you can achieve peak performance in all areas of your life.
Sounds like an overpromise, right? I was pleasantly surprised by the studies they cite that prove their postulates. And they’re not as far-fetched as you might think. They keep it simple, breaking down the key points into very digestible actions.
The book centers around four key principles that are essential for peak performance:
- Stress + rest = growth. Stress is not always a bad thing. In fact, it can be a catalyst for growth. (No pain, no gain, right?) However, too much stress can be counterproductive. The key is to find a balance between stress and rest.
- Focus and remove distractions. When you’re trying to perform at your best, it’s important to focus on the task at hand. This means eliminating distractions as much as possible. (More importantly, it proves multitasking is a myth!!!!)
- Chunk your work. When you’re faced with a large task, it can be helpful to break it down into smaller, more manageable chunks. This will make the task seem less daunting and help you stay focused. (I like to employ the Pomodoro method here.)
- Nurture a growth mindset. A growth mindset is the belief that you can improve your abilities through hard work and effort. This mindset is essential for peak performance, as it allows you to learn from your mistakes and continue to improve. (Failing forward is real.)
Here are some additional tips for achieving peak performance:
- 😴 Get enough sleep. Sleep is essential for physical and mental recovery.
- 🥗 Eat a healthy diet. Eating healthy foods will give you the energy you need to perform at your best.
- 🏋️ Exercise regularly. Exercise is a great way to reduce stress, improve your mood, and boost your energy levels.
- 🤔 Surround yourself with positive people. The people you spend time with can have a big impact on your mood and motivation.
- 🥱 Take breaks. It’s important to take breaks throughout the day to avoid burnout.
- 🥅 Set realistic goals. Setting goals that are too ambitious can lead to discouragement.
- 🎉 Celebrate your successes. When you achieve a goal, take the time to celebrate your success. This will help you stay motivated and keep moving forward.
I highly recommend giving this book a read or a listen. As I listened, I realized I was already doing some of these things. You probably are too–which makes it a little easier to implement others.
