If you’re looking for a book that will help you form good habits and break bad ones, (who isn’t?) then Atomic Habits by James Clear is the perfect choice. As one of my favorite reads, I’ve just finished listening to it for the third time.
Instead of outlining the book, here are some bits that really stood out for me.
- “You don’t rise to the level of your goals, you fall to the level of your systems.” – This one-liner may seem serious, but it’s actually a clever way of saying that your habits and systems are more important than your goals. So, if you want to achieve your goals, you need to focus on building good habits first.
- “If you’re having trouble changing your habits, the problem isn’t you. The problem is your system. Bad habits repeat themselves again and again not because you don’t want to change, but because you have the wrong system for change.” – James Clear is not afraid to call out bad habits for what they are – a problem with your system. But he does it in a way that’s both funny and insightful.
- “Habits are like atoms. You can’t see them, but they’re everywhere, and they make up everything.” – This analogy is not only clever but also scientifically accurate. Just like atoms, habits are invisible but powerful. They shape our behavior and determine our success in life.
This book helped me start to look at the changes I want to make in my life as achievable via a simple, attainable approach. Bottom line: this book is a great investment. The content is evergreen and applies to every kind of goal you want achieve.
